SOPA / Protect IP Act…A Bad Idea

Like many technologist, I do not support the U.S. House bill – Stop Online Privacy Action (SOPA) and its Senate counterpart (Protect IP Act). In a nutshell, SOPA and Protect IP would allow prosecutors to seek and obtain a court order which declares that a foreign website contains infringing material, and the order could then be used to require domain name service providers to block the allegedly infringing website. The practical effect would be that targeted website would appear as if it were deleted.

I would urge Congress first slow down and then map out the benefits of such legislation and compared the outcome to the potential harm. For so many reasons, this legislation truly frightens me. Read articles by Matt Peckham and Jerry Brito to get a good picture of the issues.
